Embrace the beauty of analog delay

Overview

The MXR Carbon Copy is a modern classic. It is a simple analog delay that is a desert island pedal for me. The repeats are dark (some say too dark) and the optional modulation adds subtle depth.

Tip #1 - Run it in front

Conventional wisdom for many guitar players is to run delay after your distortion or in the effects loop of your amp. I ran my delays this way for many years, and still do when I want super clean and clear delay repeats. However, running delay in front of your amp has a special quality that should be explored. The repeats get compressed by the amp and can allow you to get wild with repeats and oscillation. The key to running in front is adjusting your repeats and mix so that you find the desired balance.

The Carbon Copy in particular shines in this position. Its natural dark tone lends itself to being in front and helping it stay out of the way.

Tip #2 - Adjust delay time to increase brightness

While the Carbon Copy is known for its dark repeats - it does brighten up the shorter the repeats are. So play with the delay time and find the sweet spot of delay time and brightness you are looking for.
